It has Started!

Well, at last actual lines are being recorded and we have our first 3 scenes written!  This is the bit that can be a real slog or just flow and I am please to say that all our discussions and ironing out of the principals involved have made this a real pleasure.  we are both in tune with the direction the story is going and every line and word spoken is painting the picture and characters from line 1, the planned locations and interactions.

We are thinking this will work out at about 20 minutes and have already injected our own touches of humour, some very deeply personal and others obvious.  I think both of us ended tonight with that feeling of a job well done.  The picture is a hint to a scene used to establish the lead character's character.  Meet Barry!

The Rules

At last we've finally put the final touches to the outline of the story.  Much discussion was had about what imaginary friends are and the fact they could be different things to different people.  Having gone over and over our story it was clear we were mixing our own rules up and that brought on another discussion about whether films should follow rules.  I think we eventually agreed that films don't have to make sense, but have to be consistent in their story telling so not to confuse the viewer.  For example can an Imaginary friend be seen by other people?  Can imaginary friends talk to each other?  Once we established the boundaries then scripting became a lot easier.

We also juggled a few scenes around to make the story flow better on our rollercoaster ride.  We have also needed to show a passage of time and more discussion was had around whether we should use a music montage to do this.  Eventually everything fell into place and we now have a structure to work to.

Now all we need to do is fill in the scenes with actions and dialogue and then the first draft will be complete.  If only it was that simple.

The Philosophy of Imaginary Friends

Wow!!  The story is nearing completion although just as it seems we are getting things there, a deeply philosophical debate occurs on the metaphor of the Imaginary Friend and whether one of our deeper routed concepts works alongside a secondary one at a more superficial level. Meaningless to those of you out there not in the total know but believe me it could make or break the whole workability of the project as it stands if we don't get this right.   Oh the frustrations and joy of weaving a tale!

I think we are decided to stay with what we have and trial the story on individuals not party to the process and see if they either get the metaphor and accept it or it screams at them as a clash of concepts.  So the plan is next week to meet to tidy up loose ends, get it written in a format that will be understandable to our 'test audience' and ask them to read and feedback.  If you are reading this don't worry it won't be you as you already have had too many clues!

Another good evening with progress that hopefully demonstrates how much angst we go through to entertain you!

The Roller coaster begins!

Well!  A successful evening of writing that began with a discussion on the Roller Coaster theory of writing.  Basically any film or story needs to have high points interspersed with times of calm to build to a finale.  Once we had sketched this out the reasons and character developments began to flow.

We now have a beginning, middle and end with the journey reasonably well mapped out.  A few twists have emerged with the direction, in terms of trying to make this our lightest piece yet, beginning to take shape.  We are even working in what we see as comedy moments!! Let's hope audiences do as well!  That is the thing with comedy.  Will others see and enjoy our humour.  Writing humour feels very contrived and i guess we will only truly know it works when an audience experiences it.

Nest session planned for next week! Be good to progress this so we can start thinking of auditions for the middle of February.
